How to do a ping test

Help & Troubleshooting

Synergy will require that both your computers are on the same network and are able to communicate with each other in order to work. If Synergy will not connect, there is a chance your computers are not communicating. You can determine this by running a simple ping test.

How to run a ping test

The steps for running a ping test depend on the operating system being used. You will also need to know the IP address of each computer. You can find the computers IP address at the top of the Synergy main window.

For Windows 10, go to Search in the taskbar and:

  • Type “cmd” to bring up the Command Prompt.
  • Open the Command Prompt.
  • Type “ping” in the black box and hit the space bar.
  • Type the IP address you’d like to ping (e.g., 192.XXX.X.X).
  • Review the ping results displayed.

For Mac, open Finder and:

  • Go to "Applications", then open the "Utilities Folder"
  • Open "Terminal"
  • Input the IP address you’d like to ping

For Linux, open Terminal. You can also use the traceroute command to review the different IP addresses your request routes through. To do this, simply:

  • Open Terminal.
  • Type “traceroute” followed by the IP address or URL you wish to trace.
  • Hit Enter and review the results.
