How to do a ping test

Ping tests are useful for diagnosing connection issues. Whether your computers aren't talking (e.g. a timeout error), or if you're having issues with mouse lag, the ping test can help to uncover if the problem lies with Synergy or the network.

Synergy requires both your computers to be on the same network and are able to communicate with each other. If Synergy does not connect, it's possible that your computers are unable to communicate. You can determine this by running a simple ping test.

Find the IP addresses

You will need to know the IP address of each computer.

In Synergy 3:

1. Click Screen layout
2. Click This computer's details at the bottom
3. The IP address of the current computer will show

In Synergy 1:

1. Go to the main window
2. Look near the top of the window
3. The server IP is shown in the list of IPs
4. Make sure you use the IP that starts with 192 or 10

If you're not sure which IP to use, please ask us.

Run the ping test

You'll need to run the ping command using the following steps on the secondary computer (Synergy 3) or client computer (Synergy 1). The IP address you'll be pinging will be the primary computer (Synergy 3) or server computer (Synergy 1).

To run the ping command, follow the steps for your operating system.

Windows

1. Click on Search in the taskbar
2. Find and open the Command Prompt app
3. Type the command:
   -code- ping -/code-
4. Press the space bar
5. Type the IP address you’d like to ping, e.g.:
   -code- 192.X.X.X -/code-
6. Again, press space bar (again)
7. To keep the ping running, end with:
   -code- /t -/code-
8. Then press the enter key to start the ping
9. Take a screenshot of the ping results displayed

macOS

1. Open Finder
2. Go to Applications
3. Open the Utilities folder
4. Open the Terminal app
5. Type the command:
   -code- ping -/code-
6. Press the space bar
7. Type the IP address you’d like to ping, e.g.:
   -code- 192.X.X.X -/code-
8. Then press the enter key to start the ping
9. The ping should run until you close the Terminal app
10. Take a screenshot of the ping results displayed

Linux

You probably already know this, but just in case...

1. Open the Terminal app
2. Type the command:
   -code- ping -/code-
3. Press the space bar
4. Type the IP address you’d like to ping:
   -code- 192.X.X.X -/code-
5. Then press the enter key to start the ping
6. The ping should run until you close the Terminal app
