Thank you for choosing Synergy!

This is an easy to follow guide on how to install and configure Synergy on your computer. The visual appearance of your installation window may very based on the operating system on your computer.

Let's get started!

Step 1: Downloading and Installing Synergy

The first thing you will need to do is download the correct version of Synergy from your account. Synergy is compatible with most operating systems. You can find the list of supported operating systems here.

Once you log into your account, select the "Downloads" link at the top of the page as shown below, and select the appropriate operating system.

The appropriate installer will download to your computer. Please run the installer and complete setup.

Step 2: Activating Synergy

Once installation is completed, you will be prompted to enter your activation key as seen here:

You can find your serial key on your account page as shown below.

Enter the serial key and select the "Ok" button. You will be shown a confirmation message that Synergy is now activated.

Step 3: Configuring Synergy

Please take note of the following before starting the configuration: 

  • Your computers must be on the same network and the same bandwidth.
  • Your computers must be able to communicate as well. You can do a simple ping test to make sure your computers can talk to each other.
  • IPV6 is not supported and will need to be disabled.
  • VPN Connections are not fully supported. Some of them will work, but others that remove communication on the local network level will not work. You may also try connecting Synergy before activating the VPN as some users have had success that way.
  • Please add any necessary exceptions in you Firewall or Antivirus Software so that Synergy is not blocked from communicating over the network.

Configuring the Server (Computer mouse that will be shared)

  1. From the main Synergy window, select the "Server" checkbox at the top.
  2. Click the "Configure Server" button. (As shown in Figure 1 Below)
  3. Select the "Screens and Links" tab. Take note of the computer icon at the top right corner. This icon represents additional computers and can be dragged and dropped onto the grid seen on the same window.
  4. Drag and drop a computer onto the grid, to represent your actual physical setup. For example, if your client computer is physically located to the right of your server computer, place your computer icon on the grid, in the box immediately right of the server computer. The server computer will already be on the grid by default. If you misplace the computer, you can drag and drop it to the correct spot, or drag it to the Trash icon on the top left of the window. (See Figure 2)
  5. Double click on the newly placed computer and change the computer name to reflect that of your client computer. You can locate the client computer name from the Synergy main window on the client computer.
  6. Click the "Apply" button.
  7. Click the "Start" button.
  8. Take note of the IP address listed on the main window as you will need this to configure the client computer. If you have 2 IP addresses, note them both as either of them could work. (See Figure 1)
  9. Repeat steps 4 & 5 for additional clients.

Configuring the Client (Computer that will use the servers mouse)

  1. From the Synergy main window, select the client check box.
  2. Note the name of the computer listed and ensure that it matches the name of the computer you just added to the grid on the server.
  3. Enter the Server IP address that you noted in Step 6 above.
  4. Click the "Apply" button.
  5. Click the "Start" button.
  6. Repeat these steps for additional clients.

You will now get a confirmation prompt letting you know that Synergy is connected. You should now be able to share your mouse between your computers.
