Symless is now Synergy
We have retired the name Symless. From now on the company carries the same name as everything we make, which is Synergy.
Most people assumed that was already true. Customers wrote to Synergy, talked about Synergy, and searched for Synergy, and then a name they had never seen turned up on the invoice. Support came from one brand and receipts came from another. That is a small amount of friction on every transaction, repeated for years.
Nobody could say it
Symless. Sime-less, sim-less, seam-less? I have heard all three, sometimes in the same meeting. I could tell you which one is correct, except that I am not sure I know either, and I named it.
So I have always wanted to know how it sounded in other people's heads. If you have been a customer for a while, tell us how you said it. I suspect there are versions we have not heard yet.
A name you have to spell out loud every time you say it is costing you something, even if the invoice never shows it.
Where the name came from
Symless was chosen very early, when the plan was a whole family of apps for working across multiple devices. A name that did not tie us to any one of them made sense for a company that intended to build all of them.
What changed is that we learned how much Synergy actually takes. Keeping it working across Windows, macOS, Linux, and every display, input device, and desktop environment people run it on is a serious ongoing engineering effort, and it is the reason it works as well as it does. Spreading ourselves across a whole suite of multi-device tools would have meant doing several of them adequately instead of this one properly. We chose the second, and we have never regretted it.
Once that was clear, the case for a separate company name was gone. It took us a while to act on it, because a rename touches banking, payments, contracts, tax, and every document we have. It was never urgent enough to jump the queue over shipping work. This year we finally did it.
Twenty five years
Synergy started in 2001, written by Chris Schoeneman and released as open source long before there was a company attached to it. I have maintained it for most of the time since. That work has always been paid for by the people who use it, first through donations and now through licence sales, and that funding is the reason Synergy is still maintained twenty five years on rather than abandoned like most software of its age. A lot of people think we went closed source. We did not. Synergy 1 is open source, and it is the core that Synergy 3 is built on. Upstream of both is Deskflow, which we maintain in the open. That is not changing.
Twenty five years in, Synergy has outlived every plan anyone had for it, including the name we gave the company that makes it. Calling the company Synergy is just catching up with that.
What this means for you
Nothing changes about your licence, your serial key, your support, or your renewal terms. Your contracts and licences remain valid. This is a change of name, not a change of company.
The website is moving too. Later this year symless.com becomes synergyapp.io. We are keeping symless.com running indefinitely with redirects, so your bookmarks, your saved links, your activation, and your update checks all keep working exactly as they do now. We are not retiring that domain, and nothing you have installed will break because of the move.
If your IT team allowlists domains for licence activation or software updates, add synergyapp.io alongside symless.com ahead of the switch. Do not remove symless.com.
The other practical difference is paperwork. New invoices, receipts, and contracts will show Synergy App Ltd. If your finance or procurement team keeps an approved supplier record, that is the line to update. If you need written confirmation of the name change for your records, contact support and we will send it.
Everything else carries on as it was, under a name people can actually pronounce.
