Use A Crossover Cable To Improve Synergy Performance

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to connect two computers with a crossover cable to improve Synergy performance? I'm wondering if Synergy would still direct communication through the router if the client and server were connect with a crossover cable, or if they could communicate directly. One computer runs Windows (client) and the other runs Ubuntu Gnome (server). Both of my computers are on wifi, and I have a free ethernet port on each computer. I tried to connect my two computers to share my Linux computer's wifi connection with a Windows client, but couldn't get that to work. So I didn't bother trying to go further and to see if I could use a crossover cable to improve Synergy performance. I'm curious if anyone else had better luck. Currently, even-though my experience with Synergy has been mostly positive, the mouse does tend to lag at times on the client. I would run ethernet cables to both computers, but my router doesn't have any free ports and I'd rather not buy a switch. I was hoping a crossover cable might be able to perfect the performance.

nice idea, Greg - however, how would you tell your OS which IP packages to route throught the wifi network, and which ones over Ethernet? You could maybe bind that to certain ports (24800 for synergy), but I don't know how this works...

It looks like it's possible under Windows to bind applications to a network adapter using ForceBindIP (free): http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/force-spec ... p-windows/ http://www.howtogeek.com/117890/how-to- ... work-card/ And it looks like it's possible under Linux to bind applications to a network adapter using LD Preload (free - complicated): http://superuser.com/questions/241178/h ... -processes http://daniel-lange.com/archives/53-Bin ... ic-IP.html And it looks like it's possible under Linux to route any communication to a specific IP through a network adapter using routing tables (free - looks easier): http://askubuntu.com/questions/4872/bin ... interfaces https://help.ubuntu.com/community/IptablesHowTo So, in theory, it should be possible. I wish there was a way to easily implement this in Synergy. PS: I'll add this to the feature request section.

I do use a crossover cable on one of my connections for isolation purposes. It works just fine. The host is connected with a static address, and the client is also a static address. You have to configure the computer for manual, and since my host is connected to the internet and is win7, I use a Internet Gateway program (WinpkFilter) to route the TCP/IP traffic when I need updates.
