I still cant figure this out. Both are Windows 10. I managed to get this to work around 6 months ago but I stopped using it for a while. Now I just cant get this to work on any machine.

I am absolutely positive its configured correctly:

The laptop is called "MSI" (no quotes, server)

The PC is called "main-PC" (client)

I put the IP of the laptop, which is in bold,  in the Client (main-PC)

The server config map  is:

x pc, lap x x

by pc and lap I mean "main-PC" and "MSI", the names of the laptops

But I still get "note: connecting to "(laptop bold IP here.......followed by ":2400)

So I disabled the firewalls on both and I get "connection was refused".

I am stumped.

Oh and yes they are connected to the same network. I can get Team Viewer to work.

I'm getting the same problem but I've done and disabled my firewalls. It still says Failed to connect to server: Timed out. How do I fix this?

Ensure that you haven't made the same mistake as him in mistyping the port number of the server.

Additionally, try a different network. It's possible that perhaps a network configuration is creating an error. Is this your first time experiencing this issue? Have you had Synergy work before this issue? If so, what can you think of that has changed right before you started experiencing this issue that could cause it? This information will help us help you troubleshoot your issue and reach a solution.

A timed out error means that it cannot contact the server. Are you using auto-config? If so, try disabling it and using ipconfig (/all flag not needed) on Windows or ifconfig on UNIX-based (Linux and macOS) systems to find out the IP address, ensure it does not change by using DHCP reservation on your DHCP server (for home routers, your router is your DHCP server in most cases) interface and type that in manually to Synergy along with a port number you know is open. If auto-config is not on, ensure IP address & port number information is correct. Then, if that doesn't help, let auto-config run and see if it fixes anything.

Are you running Pro? If you are, it may be because of SSL settings mismatches, as that WILL cause timed out errors, from experience. This is because a device connecting to another device with SSL that isn't expecting it will not respond because the other device is not expecting the encrypted data and as such, does not have the key to decrypt it.

Try everything that I've mentioned here and come back to update us on whether it has worked or not worked. If it has not worked, please describe everything that you've done so I or another community member can help troubleshoot further.

I actually figured it out! Turns out the IP Synergy was putting out was not the IP I was looking for. So I looked into command prompt and I found it there then plugged it in and it worked.

This is an issue with Windows, as in your logs, the Windows Synergy portion is reporting that the service/executable could not start. What troubleshooting steps have you attempted? Have you tried restarting the system (I presume you have, haven't you?) and/or reinstalling the Synergy program? Let us know your findings with those preliminary troubleshooting measures and we'll go further from there. Additionally, if you'd like, you can contact [email protected] for assistance from a Symless customer service rep. However, if you'd like to continue on the forums, perform those preliminary troubleshooting steps and report back to us with your findings.

EDIT - Next time that you come back here and post, can you send us the full log (copy + paste it either directly into the forums or ideally, into something like Pastebin to enhance readability) of the two systems and specify which goes to which system instead of sending us just a snippet through a screenshot? The screenshot is nice and you can also send that alongside the full logs if you'd like, but more information will definitely help the community to assist you with this issue.

What about the other steps I have listed, such as reinstalling the Synergy program itself?

As i said, i try bouth and keep without conection

No, you said you had tried restarting the computer. You never said you tried reinstalling the Synergy program, but let's move on.

Okay, now that we know it's not an issue with the actual Synergy program itself, have you considered the possibility that a firewall is blocking it? Have you tried disabling antivirus services? Have you tried disabling your firewall? Have you tried disabling any other security solution on your computer that could possibly be blocking Synergy? We need to know the security front of things before we can move on. Let us know your findings. I'll think of something else.

And if you can't solve it through the forums, try emailing [email protected] to start a ticket. But try disabling security solutions first and report back to us.

SUGGESTION TO SYMLESS: better documentation for setups where there is failure to connect server & client

I had a similar situation; Synergy v. 1.9 running on two W10 64-bit machines but although I could ping each machine, firewall settings were OK and anti-virals were turned off, the machines failed to connect. There were messages in the server screen about SSL problems but I could not find anything in these forums about how to deal with SSL problems. After installing, uninstalling etc, I finally compared the two configuration screens and noticed that the server had installed with "Use SSL encryption" ticked while it was NOT ticked on the client side! I clicked it on the client side, restarted both and presto, I'm now connected.

Symless, this level of configuration is too subtle for the average user with little knowledge of network protocols. Please, include in your help, ideally embedded in the software as well as on these FAQs, steps on checking every possible configuration setting (including this SSL one) that needs to be correct in both the client and server in order for Synergy to connect.

About your questions, I dont use any kind of antivirus in both machines, and the firewall its turn off too.

I check what JhonCleBlanc said and in both machine the "Use SSL encryption" option is disable, i cant turn it on.
I dont know if has anything related to my problem but just in case.

John, this is a different issue; You got the service to start, it's just that there was an SSL mismatch. If you talk in code and the other person expects pure English, of course the other person is going to be confused. You just have enough cognitive sense to sort it out, but that's not true for a computer system.

But in Mauri's situation, the executable is failing to start. There is something on the system that is preventing the Synergy executable from starting, because if you look at his logs, there are multiple failed attempts that indicate he tried to start the service, as indicated by "[2017-09-29T21:54:20] INFO: starting new process
[2017-09-29T21:54:20] ERROR: could not launch
[2017-09-29T21:54:20] ERROR: exit code: 0"

Synergy is flat out broken on his system. What version are you using? Have you tried updating to v.1.9rc3 if you're running 1.8.8 stable? Two things, firstly, it would ensure that my previous recommendation of Synergy reinstallation has been performed, and it would update the software to a newer version where this issue may have been potentially solved or at the very least, flushes out the 1.8.8 config files. This is only, however, true if you're using 1.8.8.

Let us know what Synergy version you're running. If it's 1.8.8, download Synergy 1.9-rc3 from here.

As I mentioned in my text, I'm running v 1.9. I was running 1.8.8 stable earlier today and decided to uninstall both and then install 1.9.0rc3 on both server and client. Had I noticed the SSL tick box in v. 1.8.8 that probably would have fixed my problem then and there.

What I'm trying to point out is that the Synergy help files need some work from the perspective of a naive user and the log files are inscrutable to the average user, perhaps not the average Synergy user but certainly the average computer user. If you want Synergy to be attractive to wider circle than sophisticated users, i.e., a circle of general users who are not going to read a log file the way many of your current users do, you're goiing to have to put more effort into understanding the interface and how to troubleshoot problems from the perspective of those users, e.g., your parent or spouse who says, "I don't care how it works, just tell me how fix it".

John, your problem was solved.

I'm now working to help Mauri solve his problem.

Also, John, I'm sure people who can't go through log files and deal with mild technical jargon such as "SSL" and look at the configuration itself aren't the target audience for Synergy. The people who can't do what I just mentioned are probably not going to use Synergy, but instead go the route of dual displays.

Even then, have you heard about Synergy 2? I specifically pinned it in this forum for people like you (that's not to be taken as an insult, but "people like you" as in people who think Synergy 1's config is too complex). Synergy 2's configuration is non-existent. Peer discovery and making a stable connection are all taken care by cloud-based software. It's basically SaaS without the consistent payment.
